The changes taking place in the environment and the threats they pose to the planet come as no surprise. With the realization of the costs of uncurbed and unsustainable development, humanity finds itself in a trap. The real problem is not the lack of capacity to resolve the crisis but rather the unwillingness to do what it takes. In what appears to be the first stab at the subject in any thematic edition of Przegląd Zachodni, ecology, energy transition and the rise of political groups riding on the platform of environmental protection are discussed revealing the sheer swiftness of change. Marginalized only a few decades ago, green parties are now on the rise, posting ever more spectacular electoral victories as global climate change and energy mix issues inspire national and local responses. Recent jokes about waste sorting in Germany no longer make people laugh as waste is recognized as an egalitarian challenge faced by large industrial companies as well as ordinary inhabitants of even the smallest communities.
